No Party Preference Voters

If you did not provide a political party preference when you registered to vote or last updated your voter registration, you are a No Party Preference voter, or NPP for short.

Do you want to nominate a candidate for President in the March 5, 2024 Presidential Primary Election?

As a No Party Preference voter, you have a choice to make regarding what type of ballot you receive.

You may pick one of the following ballot types:

  1. A nonpartisan ballot that will not include the presidential nomination contest, but will include contests for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, California Assembly, Superior Court Judge, and State propositions, and may include State Senate, County Board of Education, County Board of Supervisors, and city measure(s) if you live within a district up for election in 2024.

If you do not make a choice, a non-partisan ballot will be mailed to you in early-February.

  1. A party ballot for one of the six qualified political parties in California that will include the party’s presidential nomination contest as well as all of the other federal, state and local contests mentioned above

There are two methods of requesting a party ballot depending on whether the political party has authorized No Party Preference voters to vote for one of their Presidential candidates:

    1. If you are not affiliated with a qualified party, and would like to request a ballot for the American Independent Party, Democratic Party, or the Libertarian Party click here.

    2. To receive a ballot for the Green Party, Peace and Freedom Party, or Republican Party, you must re-register to vote and select the party as your political party preference.

Background of Presidential Primary Elections in California

Pursuant to California Elections Code section 13102(c), each of the six qualified political parties must decide at least 135 days before the date of the Presidential Primary Election whether they will permit No Party Preference voters to vote the party’s ballot. This is not a decision made by the Registrar of Voters; we simply impartially implement the decision made by each political party.

For the 2024 Presidential Primary Election, the following parties have agreed to allow No Party Preference voters to vote their party’s ballot for the President of the United States contest:

  • American Independent Party
  • Democratic Party
  • Libertarian Party

The other three qualified parties did not agree to allow No Party Preference voters to vote their party’s ballots.

Please Note: All voters in California will automatically receive a vote-by-mail ballot.
